Ex. 4-5: In meinem Garten die Nelken

No. 12 from Franz's "12 Gesänge" (Op. 1), published by the Leipzig firm Whistling in 1843 and dedicated to Luise Gutike. The poem is "Mädchenlieder 1" (Maiden's Songs 1) from Emanuel Geibel's "Jugendgedichte" (Poems of Youth).

Every verse ends with the refrain "denn du bist fern" (for you are far away). The carnations dry up, the fire in the fireplace burns down to ash, and no flower or star brings a greeting — all because the beloved is far away. Geibel's poem also attracted settings by Schoenberg and others.
