Ex. 9-4: Nach Süden
Fanny Mendelssohn
No. 1 — the opening song — of Fanny Mendelssohn's 5 Lieder (Op. 10). Her brother Felix gathered many of her works for publication shortly before his own death, and the set appeared in 1850, published by Breitkopf & Härtel. The poem is probably by Fanny's husband, the painter Wilhelm Hensel, and follows birds flying south for the winter — a song of longing for the warm south.
That longing was real. Fanny had traveled to Italy in 1839–40, where artists there welcomed her as a composer and pianist. One of them was the young French composer Charles Gounod. Fanny introduced him to the music of Bach, which stayed an inspiration to him for the rest of his life.
Other songs from Op. 10 are also in this app. (Ex. 11-4: Vorwurf by Fanny Mendelssohn, Ex. 6-5: Abendbild by Fanny Mendelssohn, Ex. 7-6: Bergeslust by Fanny Mendelssohn)
