Ex. 6-6: O Lust, o Lust

Clara Schumann

Key: E♭/CmTime: 6/86 Lieder (Op.23)

No. 6 — the final song — of Clara Schumann's 6 Lieder (Op. 23), composed on 21 June 1853 in Düsseldorf. As in the rest of the set, the poem is by Hermann Rollett, from his book Jucunde.

The cycle ends in pure joy. The poem opens and closes with the same lines: "O Lust, o Lust, vom Berg ein Lied in's Land hinab zu singen!" (O joy, o joy, to sing a song down from the mountain into the land!) — the joy of song reaching out from one heart to the whole world.

These were among the last works Clara composed; the next year Robert's mind collapsed, and she wrote almost nothing more. Op. 23 was published in 1856 and dedicated to the soprano Livia Frege, a family friend. Other songs from the same set are also in this app. (Ex. 2-5: An einem lichten Morgen by Clara Schumann, Ex. 5-6: Das ist ein Tag, der klingen mag by Clara Schumann)
