Ex. 10-2: Waltz in D flat major

Ludwig van Beethoven

Key: D♭/B♭mTime: 3/4Six Waltzes (Anh.14) (edited)

No. 6 of Six Waltzes (Anh. 14), a set published under Beethoven's name but almost certainly not written by him. In Beethoven catalogues, "Anh." (short for Anhang, "appendix") marks works of doubtful or false authorship.

Schott, a publisher in Mainz, brought out the set in 1828 — the year after Beethoven died. It was a memorial album called Souvenir à Beethoven, which also included the funeral march from his Piano Sonata Op. 26. A "new" Beethoven still sold well, even when it was not really his.

The set is best known for its first waltz, the "Sehnsuchtswalzer" (Longing Waltz). Its main tune is actually by Franz Schubert (from his "Trauerwalzer"), combined with a waltz by Friedrich Heinrich Himmel — so a Schubert melody was being sold under Beethoven's name. The composer of this waltz — No. 6, in D-flat major — is still unknown.

Note: This version has been edited for sight-singing practice.
