From Fauré's Trois Mélodies (Op. 18), composed in 1878. The poem is by Leconte de Lisle, from his Poèmes antiques, under the section "Scottish Songs" — inspired by the Scottish poet Robert Burns.
The poem is based on Burns's "A Red, Red Rose" (1794). "Nell" is the name Leconte de Lisle gave to the beloved — it does not appear in Burns's original.
