Ex. 2-5: An einem lichten Morgen

Clara Schumann

Key: F/DmTime: 4/46 Lieder (Op. 23)

No. 2 from Clara Schumann's "6 Lieder" (Op. 23), composed in June 1853 in Düsseldorf. The poem, from Hermann Rollett's novel "Jucunde," is an impassioned morning song in which the sunlight calls to a sleeping flower: "Wake up, dear flower — I am the sunbeam!"

1853 was the last year Clara composed actively. The following year, her husband Robert suffered a mental breakdown and threw himself into the Rhine. Consumed by his care, raising their children, and her career as a pianist, she composed almost nothing thereafter. This song cycle preserves the full maturity of her craft.
