Ex. 6-5: Abendbild
Fanny Mendelssohn
No. 3 from Fanny Mendelssohn's 5 Lieder (Op. 10), set to a poem by Nikolaus Lenau (1802–1850). She composed it on 2 September 1846, in the last year of her life.
The poem is a peaceful evening scene. It begins "Friedlicher Abend senkt sich aufs Gefilde" (A peaceful evening settles over the fields). Nature slowly falls asleep under the twilight, smiling like a sleeping child in its father's arms.
1846 — the year she wrote this song — was also the year Fanny first published a work under her own name, at the age of 40. Earlier, some of her songs had appeared under her brother Felix's name. She died of a stroke the following year, at 41, and this collection was published after her death, in 1850. Other songs from the same collection are also in this app. (Ex. 9-4: Nach Süden by Fanny Mendelssohn, Ex. 11-4: Vorwurf by Fanny Mendelssohn, Ex. 7-6: Bergeslust by Fanny Mendelssohn)
