Ex. 4-14: If I were a bird, I would sing all day.
Liza Lehmann
Key: B♭/GmTime: 6/85 Little Love Songs
No. 4 from Liza Lehmann's 5 Little Love Songs, published in 1910 by Chappell & Co. in London. The text is by the American poet Cora Randall Fabbri (1871–1892), who died at the age of 21; the poem was taken from a collection published after her death.
The singer imagines being a bird who would sing all day for her beloved, and a flower (a daisy) who would kiss his feet as he passes by. Lehmann herself was a successful soprano before turning to composition, and her songs are known for making the voice sound its best.
