Composed in 1795 when Beethoven was 25 years old, and first published in 1803 — the same year as his 3rd Symphony.

After Beethoven's death, the original manuscript came to be owned by Schubert, who sketched part of a piano sonata on its blank pages in 1817. It was later acquired by Brahms, who donated it to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna in 1893. The manuscript preserves the handwriting of all three composers.
