Ex. 13-2: Adagio cantabile (edited fragment)

Ludwig van Beethoven

Key: F#/D#mTime: 4/4Piano Sonata No. 24 (Op.78)

From Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp major (Op. 78), composed in 1809 — the same year as the "Emperor" Concerto. Dedicated to Countess Thérèse von Brunswick, giving the sonata its nickname "à Thérèse." Beethoven was close to the Brunswick family, and he treasured a portrait of Thérèse that she had given him for the rest of his life.

According to Anton Schindler, Beethoven himself considered this sonata, along with the "Appassionata" (Op. 57), among his personal favorites.

Note: Thérèse von Brunswick is a different person from Therese Malfatti, who is considered a leading candidate for the "Elise" of Für Elise.

Note: This version has been substantially arranged for vocal range. It differs considerably from the original.
