Ex. 3-10: Mandoline

Gabriel Fauré

Key: G/EmTime: 4/45 Melodies (Op. 58)

From Fauré's Cinq mélodies "de Venise" (Op. 58), composed in 1891. The poem is by Paul Verlaine, from his collection Fêtes galantes (1869), inspired by the paintings of Antoine Watteau.

The same poem was also set to music by Debussy and Reynaldo Hahn, making it one of the most frequently composed texts in the French mélodie repertoire.

The poem ends with the mandolin chattering in the shivering breeze — the instrument appears only in the final image.
