Ex. 3-10: Mandoline

Gabriel Fauré

Key: G/EmTime: 4/45 Melodies (Op. 58)

From Fauré's Cinq mélodies "de Venise" (Op. 58), composed in 1891. The poem is by Paul Verlaine, from his collection Fêtes galantes (Gallant Festivities, 1869), inspired by the paintings of Antoine Watteau.

The same poem was also set to music by Debussy and Reynaldo Hahn, making it one of the most frequently composed texts in the French mélodie repertoire.

Although the song is titled "Mandoline," the mandolin itself appears only in the poem's final line. Other songs from the same collection are also in this app. (Ex. 6-11: En sourdine by Gabriel Fauré, Ex. 12-8: Green by Gabriel Fauré)

Track 3 from the album Fiançailles pour rire by Natalie Dessay and Philippe Cassard (2015)
