Ex. 2-5: An einem lichten Morgen
Clara Schumann
Key: F/DmTime: 4/46 Lieder (Op. 23)
No. 2 from Clara Schumann's "6 Lieder" (Op. 23), composed in June 1853 in Düsseldorf. The poem, from Hermann Rollett's novel "Jucunde," is a passionate morning song in which the sunlight calls to a sleeping flower: "Wake up, dear flower — I am the sunbeam!"
1853 was the last year Clara composed actively. The following year, her husband Robert suffered a mental breakdown and threw himself into the Rhine. Consumed by his care, raising their children, and her career as a pianist, she composed almost nothing thereafter. This song cycle preserves the full maturity of her craft.
