Ex. 9-1: 1. Aria

Antonio Vivaldi

Key: E/C#mTime: 12/8Nulla in mundo pax sincera (RV 630)

A sacred motet (RV 630) composed by Vivaldi around 1713–1719 to an anonymous Latin text. Scored for solo soprano, two violins, viola, and basso continuo. The title translates as "In this world there is no honest peace."

The text contrasts the deceitful pleasures of the world with the peace found in Jesus. It warns that "the serpent hisses among flowers, concealing its venom" — and that a man maddened by love "will often kiss as if licking honey."

The first aria was featured in the 1996 Australian film Shine, a biographical drama about pianist David Helfgott.
