Ex. 2-10: Sylvie

Gabriel Fauré

Key: F/DmTime: 3/43 Songs (Op. 6)

No. 3 from Fauré's "3 Mélodies" (Op. 6), composed in 1878 — later than the first two songs in the set. The poem is by Paul de Choudens, son of the music publisher Antoine de Choudens, who published Fauré's scores. This is the only poem by Choudens that Fauré ever set to music.

The poem is a straightforward declaration of love to a woman named Sylvie, ending with the confession: "Why do I love your languidly shining eyes so madly? Because without you, my heart would be filled with pain." Another song from the same collection is also in this app. (Ex. 2-9: Aubade by Gabriel Fauré)

Track 2 from the album Nuit d'étoiles - Mélodies françaises by Véronique Gens and Roger Vignoles (2000)
