Ex. 11-5: Songs My Mother Taught Me
Antonín Dvořák
Key: B/G#mTime: 2/4Gypsy Songs (Op.55)
No. 4 from Dvořák's Gypsy Songs (Op. 55), composed in 1880 to poems by Adolf Heyduk in both Czech and German. This is Dvořák's most famous song.
Fritz Kreisler transcribed it for violin and piano (published 1914), which further spread its popularity.
The American composer Charles Ives wrote his own setting of the same Heyduk poem about fifteen years later. (Ex. 6-13: Songs My Mother Taught Me by Charles Ives)
