Ex. 10-11: Bouton de Rosa
Amelia Lehmann
By Amelia Lehmann (née Chambers, 1838–1903), a British composer who published many of her songs under the pseudonym "A. L." She was the mother of the composer Liza Lehmann (1862–1918), who is also featured in this app. (Ex. 4-13: If I were a bird, I would sing all day. by Liza Lehmann)
Amelia was gifted with a beautiful voice and absolute pitch, but suffered from extreme shyness throughout her life. Her daughter Liza wrote: "I have never met anyone so naturally gifted as my beloved mother. She had a lovely voice... but she was never confident about her own achievements, and could hardly ever be induced to sing before anyone." Amelia destroyed most of her own compositions out of self-criticism. This song was published in 1899, late in Amelia's life — likely through the encouragement of her daughter Liza, who by then was already an established composer and performer.
Liza herself went on to become a successful soprano and composer. She was the first woman to be commissioned to write a musical comedy for London's West End.
